The craggy heights of the Mountain Zebra National Park's Bankberg that embrace the park's rolling plains and deep valleys, were blanketed in unseasonable snow, and buffeted by chilly winds yesterday.
The park, home to, among others, the Cape mountain zebra, Cape buffalo, black rhino, eland, black wildebeest, red hartebeest and gemsbok, mountain reedbuck and grey rhebok, is expereinceing unseasonable chilly weather.
However, the cold winds and snowy peaks add to the park's already considerable charms as an isolated getaway for mind, body and soul. Many of the chalets have fireplaces, and ample warm and cosy bedding. The park shop is well stocked with sherry, and the park restaurant has underfloor heating for just such occassions. The park is situated 12 km from the picturesque town of Cradock on the Middelburg-Graaff Reinett road, and is only 280 km from Port Elizabeth, 800 km from Cape Town, 800 km from Johannesburg. For enquiries, contact reservations or the park direct on 048 881 2427. The worst of the cold weather is expected to be over by the weekend.
