Giraffe what you saw is natural.

When a male giraffe is seen to bend down and appear to 'sniff' the rear end of a female, he is actually trying to ascertain her reproductive status by means of flehmen by either liquid(urine) or pheromonal means.

Flehmen( a german word) is practised by most hoofed animals and many carnivores. This action causes ducts to open in the mouth and nasal passages, allowing the scent signals to be transferred to, and annalysed by, a special organ called the vemero-nasal organ which is situated between the nose and mouth cavities.

Hope this help.

Im so glad humans dont have to do this!! :slap:

Ah yes nobody around...needed a leak...get out and notice this Giraffe coming to cross the road 50 metres on the far side. Grab camera and sit in the shadow of my car hidden from his approach on the road next to the closed drivers door...wait 3 mins and oblivious long neck strides into the road...take a shot which stops him in his tracks and take this one as he looks at me and then sit dead still for a couple of minutes, wind in my favour, as he stares at this "dead" apparition next to the car. Finally turns slowly and ambles across thoroughly confused...give him time and then finish the toiletries and get back in and proceed...yes low angle works great as long as you dont disturb nature and there are no other tourists around

We saw this giraffe just after we entered at Numbe gate. It seems to be suffering from a bad injury but somehow learned to cope. We watched it browsing away, chewing every morsel.
Any ideas about how it got injured? SO thinks he could have been hurt in a fight, I think he landed on his nose during birth.

Strange looking giraffe this one :D

I doubt it was caused from fighting, only due to the giraffe being a female..........Could quite possibly be a rough girl though  Pretty sure it's just a birth defect.........But I like the idea of the nose dive!

Amazing, JenB!

Wonder about the "birth defect", as how would it have been able to suckle?!

On the other hand...maybe it did! :hmz:

An interesting point is that most of the "chewing" is done by the molar teeth, far back in the jaw, which seems normal in this individual, while the actual plucking of leaves is done by the tongue, mostly! :|
