Richman,
No doubt about this one. He is one of the Big Tuskers at the moment and named Nwashinangana

I am interested to get your pictures to update his pages/file
I you like, please send the pics to
tuskers@zeelandnet.nl
incl your name, location and date of pics please ...thanks ahead

[quote="Richman"]I spoted this Big Guy walking in the Nwatswitswonto Riverbed along the H1-3 . He didn't hang around long so couldn't get a better picture. But it was very special to see such a big tuskers.

Johan,
I am sorry but can't ID this one. I agree he could have been a big one in the past.

[quote="Johan van Rensburg"]Seen 18 November at Sable Dam. This ellie has lost both tusks, but the girth of the remaining stumps makes me think that he must have had some impressive ivory at one time and may be on record somewhere as a tusker. I have checked out the database for tuskers and have not been able to match him to anyone of those ellies.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Pumbaa,
I don't recognize this one. Will add a few copies to my database to see if there more entries of this one.

Our last tusker which we saw this year - Not quite sure whether this is only one tusker or two different ones - Therefore I posted both together

Also on that part a couple of loops leading closer to the river can be driven and in one of these we spotted down in the riverbed of the Shingwedzi an elephant bull drinking from one of the remaining puddles.

From where we stood with our car it was nearly impossible to take pictures without twisting most of our bodies. He carried on drinking as if this was everything what we had to do on that morning and we realized that he only had one thick and upright pointing left tusk.

A shame was once more that our last full day was a bit quiet for our liking but as already said you cannot have it all especially after the very rewarding first weeks. On our way back to Bateleur I made the proposal to give the S101 a try and maybe Mr. Thick left tusker moved a bit and may would come across on that road and you can imagine that we looked more than a bit puzzled when a huge grey mass could be seen behind a mopane bush.

It looked indeed as this was the one we saw earlier that morning in the riverbed although it was a bit annoying that right when we stopped an excessive rain shower came down and made the light a bit difficult.

We realized a small notch in this right ear and he presented his very strange formed right tusk in a nice way.

Needless to say that the rain did not bother him in any way and he munched simply happily away

and was one of the gentler giants and seemed to feel not disturbed by us in any way.

The minute the rain shower stopped Mr. elephant walked off.

Crested Val,
I am really sorry but can't ID these guys. I guess some are not tuskers some could be but impossible for me to give an ID , that would be just guessing and that makes no sense to my opinion.
Wish I could do more for you :(

[quote="Crested Val"]Hi Aat..........welcome home, and hope kruger was kind to you!!!

When you've regained your breath, please could you look at these lovely ellies, and see if anyone of them may be a known or promising tusker. I'm guessing that they're not, but no harm in asking!!

Apologies for the bad photos!!
They were all seen around the Letaba/Phalaborwa/Mopani triangle.
Some of them may even be the same ellie!!

jesica,

Tusker with longest tusks at the moment is probably Masthulele

A small group of tuskers carry thick / long tusks and they are:
MAC
Babalala
Machachule
Nwashinangana
Mavalanga
Mavatsani
Ngunyupezi
Madolo

* Unsure about Tsotsi , haven't heard much about him for a long time.

I notice a deep silence of current tusker sightings !

My experience is that big tuskers have a inborn nervousness
about humans and will avoid them as far as possible.
[ Ever noticed a tusker with some askari's around him always
lurking way out in the back ? ]

It now is rainy season in KNP and the tuskers have no reason
to remain near the bigger rivers where most of the tourist roads
run - so they go to areas unknown to us mortals confined
to tourist roads because pans and wallows out in the bush
get filled with water which soon turn into "marvelous" mud
by buffs, pigs and elephants.

Because most of the veld where these pans/wallows now occur
are way into the bush in areas never grazed for months,
the veld there is in pristine condition for our tusked friends.

At the end of the rainy season the "veld" water will dry up
again and our tusker buddies will start moving back to the
riverine areas where most tourist road run and all of a sudden
May 2012 will see lots of tusker sightings being reported on
this thread !

100ponder,
Makes sense what you said !

During last trip I have seen 4 named tuskers , in May 11.
I also believe most tuskers are at the fresh grounds and some move to the places they were born to mate. This last one is proved by MAC and Nwashinangana... they move slowly to the timbavati area in march-april-may.
Even the so called "home tuskers" like Masthulele and Marhumbini (and others) are not showing themselves that often near Letaba - Mopani.
I saw Marhumbini once at greater distance and Nshawani close by , just crossed the road before I could see him.

Remarkable was the large number of big bulls near Tihongonyeni waterhole (they changed the waterhole into a natural looking waterhole , much bigger and closer to the Capricorn Loop road) We have seen many many bulls with loads of buffalo in november / december)
Never seen that many buffalo herds before there....so this change of the waterhole has a great impact on behaviour and appearance of these animals.

Best wishes to all tuskermites for 2012 !!
