As with most animals, servals fight for females and territory. Very little is known about this ritual but I found this out:
The two males will sit and face each other as one of them puts his paw on the others' chest. The second male bobs his head and might bite the paw. This usually stays a stare-off but it can become a full force fight. Not sure how one of them 'wins'. :?

Sorry I forgot where I got the info, I remember it from the project I did.

As posted on "trip reports", here are my first ever serval pics, taken about 2km before Transport dam turnoff coming from PK last Wednesday, around 15h00.

Actually spotted by my co-pilot.

It really fills me with great feelings to read about more serval sightings in places I have never heard of them being.

I have never heard of a Kruger serval census. Is there such a thing.

Man, I MUST see one again.

Maybe you should plan a quick visit to Talamati, BB. I've read somewhere that people see them quite often there, especially on night drives

In 2001 I went on a night ride from Tal, Obi, and there he was at a skip, drinking and looking around for a few minutes before sauntering off into the bush.

The only better (of 5) sighting was in 2003 (or 4?) in the grasslands near Duke dam, this chappie was on the road and then next to the vehicle and bounded off as they are known to do. That was my last serval sighting. I am ready for another!!!!

Saw this guy on my first and only trip to Kruger in April. He just walked out of the undergrowth and as soon as he saw our car he bolted back in the bushes. Managed to quickly get this picture. :D

They are bolters for sure .

They favour riverine and marsh land habitats, so I am sure the timbavati would be good.

Hi there Forumites,
Was watching a self made dvd of our trip to KNP June'07
where I saw my very first serval. I wonder how often they are seen and when and where can one expect to see them (hot spots). I saw this one at about 9 O' clock the one morning on the S100 and one later the week at night on a sunset drive close to Skukuza.

Just curious because this little Kitty crept right into my heart!!!!

02/04/2008 - 09/04/2008 Skukuza

Have had 5 sightings of my favourite cat.
1 On a night ride from Skuk, near Stevenson Hamilton Memorial,
2 On the tar road south of Leeupan
3 Great sighting on a night ride from Talamati, where they are often seen
4 & 5 On a night ride from LS in the Duke waterhole area. First was a fleeting glimpse, the other was on the road  and then bounded off.
Sorry no pics, but I am due for another sighting!

Saw two in Kruger.

2000: On a drive from Skukuza to Pretoriuskop(this can be regarded as a very good sighting up close of it ).

Thanx for all the replies!
It would seem that there could be certain Hot spots to see them, Talamati and Skukuza.
It would also seem that most sightings were at night!!!!! That means that I will have to go on a sunset drive again, Aaaah (gr8 excuse). Thanks for the gr8 pic.

Well my trip to the Kruger is just around the corner and I can't wait any more, maybe I will see one of the forumites there!
