Just heard about the cheetah cubs this morning! That's hugely exciting, and I can't wait to go and look for them! Have they been seen regularly? Would also be interesting to get an update on the cheetah research taking place - what is the main prey for the cheetah in the park, and how often do they hunt, for example?

Hi Jeff! Apparently there's 8 cubs, 4 to each of the 2 females that were released in 2007.

That's great news - here's hoping they all survive.
Never made it to MZNP before, I think it's time!

Hi Dieter,
The cubs have not been seen by tourists yet as they are still quite young so the mothers do not move very much and concentrate on protecting their cubs in secluded areas. Once they are a little bit older, they'll start to move around much more and sightings will become more frequent. The best chance of seeing them is on the Kranskop Loop in the Park. Park rangers have been keeping an eye on them by tracking the mothers who have radio collars.

The most favoured prey of the cheetah in the Park is mountain reedbuck, followed by springbok. Cheetah usually hunt every 3-4 days and consume most of their kill in one feeding session.

We are going to MZNP tomorrow, hopefully we will find the cubs.

Maybe chat up one of the rangers or other staff? They are bound to know the whereabouts of both litters...

Definitely will give it a try, and will hopefully have some good news on Monday.

I personally cannot wait for the brownies to be introduced next year. They are may favourite predators.

These cubs were mentioned in this month's issue of the outdoor magazine I am subscribed to and I was wondering how they are doing.

Any information anyone? Are both sets of cubs doing well?

yes, naomi, all the cubs are still doing well. One of the sets of cubs was seen with their mother by tourists a few weeks ago - the first tourist sighting of which we know! The sighting was near the Weltevrede picnic site where they were crossing a road.

Hi all

My folks were in MZNP yesturday and saw one set of the cheetah cubs. Their mom had killed an adolescent kudu female (according to the rangers that were also present). My folks could only see 2 of the cubs as they were quite far away, but the rangers said that all 4 were there and confirmed that the other 4 cubs were also doing well!
