On Tuesday 15 September whilst at Rooidam at Addo I observed a male black backed jackal being approached by a very subservient jackal which from a distance appeared to be hairless, a uniform greyish colour and a long scrawny tail. Can someone explain this to me?

MANGE! Have seen similar hairless jackal at Hapoor. Apparantly quite common in Addo.

They are sick ! ( Irritating skin ) They itch all the time and need to scratch the whole time.
They eventually die of this. Later it becomes so bad that they cannot even search for food. ( They scratch to much )

Is Addo now located in the Kgalagadi or Richtersveld? If not, maybe the mods can sort this out.

Very interesting topic, by the way, wherever Addo is!! Always something to discover/learn where animals are concerned.

Hippotragus Addo Elephant Park is in the Eastern Cape. 60 km from Port Elizabeth. A must visit if you have not been there.

Thanks MarilizeB - even though I haven't been there, I know very well where Addo is situated. That is why I was (I hope humorously) questioning why the topic was placed in the Arid Parks section of the Forum, which covers Kgalagadi, Augrabies, Richtersveld etc. rather than the Frontier Parks section, which covers Addo and other parks in that area.

Still an interesting topic.

It was on our first visit to Addo and I thought we discovered a "new kind of animal."
Apparently they get it from the nearby domestic animals. The jackals don't have to many enemies in Addo, so this is a natural way of population control, but surely not a nice way.
We have experienced a dramatic increase in jackal sightings between 2006 and 2009, but I don't mind, I found them amazing to watch. On our last trip we saw 5 together catching flying ants.

Hoephoep, we have also seen so many jackals. I think on every visit we count about 4. ( We visit addo at least twice a month ) I love it when they look for food under elephant dung? They lift it with one front leg and then they eat the dungbeetles. They go from the one dung to the next dung. Very nice to see them to this.

Yes, I have heard that they get it from Dogs that enter the park.

We saw this guy when we were in Addo in August. At first we didn't even recognise it as a BBJ
