Hey guys!
I'll look for the white tail-tip, as this is a good way to be sure. It's just that the saddle-back of the black-backed is not always fully developed, and may seem rudimentary. I know the face is also more wolf-like with the side-striped, but the oneI saw running away near Orpen seemed to look like a black-backed, but with a stripe down the side! Tail it will be next time ... TX all.

I saw this side-striped jackal on the H5 near Mpondo Dam on the 4th May 09.
Seen 1 on the S114 before and 1 also near Lower Sabie - both a few years ago

(By the way, I see we cannot use the convenient initials of your name "BM" because there is someone on the forums now called Bushmom.)

I've seen them four times in all the years I've been; and haven't seen a SSJ now for almost 15 years during the day (once, unclear, on a night drive). :( :( You're not alone!

Last weekend they didn't manage to elude me!

We got two of them in the road but before I could get a pic they moved into the bush. I got this shot, but not a very good one. :(
