As a Canon fan with the 100-400 I am not too happy with Sigma lenses.
Their quality is not constant, a complaint often heard, and the are slow, both in light and in focussing.

I would rather buy a Nikon prime lens if I could afford it...... ....until that moment I will have to stick to the slightly cheaper lenses and the new 50-500mm is a good lens, quality is better than it used to be....

Ello, I have a 150-500 sigma lens and have been using it for some time. I have not one complaint, and have experienced none of the problems expressed in terms of quality and focussing and as a result would highly recommend this lens.

I've had a Sigma 50 - 500 since September last year , and quite happy with it .

I too have the Sigma 50-500 and have used it with no problems for 4 years. I am dreaming of moving up to a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 lens before my next holiday, though they are very expensive. Even a used one is over R46000.00. If I can't get one, I can continue to dream, and use my trusty Sigma 50-500.

If I can't find a secondhand Sigma 500mm F4.5 for a "nice price" I will buy the 50-500mm(most reviews recommend this one).

Do you have the EX version..... without stabilization

mine is EX - have to look at it, don't think it has stabilization like some of my Nikon lenses - can't picture it from here at work, will have to take a peek when I get home from work to be sure.

Hey guys, one other thing you guys can look at doing if you are not able to afford a prime (i am doing the same thing), is to rent a lens ODP, www.alensforhire.co.za, its cheap I am only renting a 1.4 TC for my 300m F4 for my trip to Kruger second week of July. But there is a variety of lenses you can rent, from EFS right up to EF 600 L lenses as well as bodies....this is a good way to use a lens you want to buy before jumping into it

When you say 5 lenses in the 70-200 range, you are refering to the 2 X F4's and the 2 X2.8 with the IS version haveing mark I and Mark II right?

My father has owned the 100-400 L for a few years now (thinks its about 4 years) and he has never had a problem with it at all. i have used it myself and it is an amazing lenses: versatile with the zoom range, IS is good, image quality is, as all L lenses are, very very good, only problem I have with it is the focusing time, but this is to be expected with such a huge focal range.

I prefer the primes to zooms, (even though i am looking for a secong hand 70-200 F4) as the image quality is just unbeatable. As stated before i have 200 f2.8 , 300 f4 , and a 90 f2.8. one of the other things I like about primes are that you have to think about how you are going to take the picture, in my eyes, it is how photography should be, a bit of a challenge but amazing good fun at the same time. not just zoom out a bit and shoot. anyone can do that:):)

With these 3 lenses I can photograph almost anything at excelent quality.
