Hi all ,

After 2 short visits to the park, it has become one of a my favorites, a place I immediately start missing as soon as I leave.

I've stayed in Leokwe and LFTC, both are amazing and very different.

I would strongly advise doing the sunset drive. We saw a lot of game (including a leopard!!), but the scenery is already more than enough, and being outside and driving seldom driven roads is just magical.

Looking forward to visiting Mapungubwe in late August. 3 things:

- is that informative centre now open? Earlier posts suggest it's not, yet.

- are the heritage walks to Mapungubwe hill reliably held daily? It's an important reason for us to go.

- can anyone suggest a nice place to break the trip from Joburg? Any particular guesthouse/B&B in a cute dorpie near the N1 up there?

The Mapungubwe Interpretation Center is not open yet; however we are hoping to open the center later this year;

- are the heritage walks to Mapungubwe hill reliably held daily? It's an important reason for us to go.

As part of Mapungubwe activities we do provide game drive to Mapungubwe hill and simultaneously with the Mapungubwe Story telling.

- can anyone suggest a nice place to break the trip from Joburg? Any particular guesthouse/B&B in a cute dorpie near the N1 up there?

You can drive straight from JHB to Mapungubwe within 6-7 hours provided you live in the morning.

Which road to Mapungubwe from Pretoria is advisable? The one via Musina or via Vivo/Alldays? (main roads can be so boring)

I would suggest Vivo/Alldays. Took this road in april this year.

I have done both routes and both routes are good. The Alldays has the advantage of no tolls, hence cheaper.

The N1 has a few very scenic areas with magnificent Baobabs. It also has a good shopping centre on the way if you need to stock up.

Where is the shopping centre MM? I've just booked up Mapungubwe for next year and will be heading up from the airport.

the shopping centre is just off the N1 in Makhado, what used to be called Louis Trichardt. It is situated between Polekwane and Mussina on the toll road.

There is a very pleasant centre where all needs can be met. I seem to remember that the main shop was a Pick and Pay, but they had a news agency and liqour outlet as well. The fact that it was just off the main route meant that it was very convenient. It is far better to shop there than Mussina that can be very crowded with Zimbabwens doing over the border shopping.

I also loved the large baobabs on the route, quite spectacular.

I do hope that you have a stunning stay. Mapungubwe is such a special place.

Is the night drives worth doing in Mapungubwe? (I'm staying in Limpopo Forest tent)

As all the drives depart from the main reception, you would have to drive there and back from LFTC — which is allowed, but not something that I chose to do.

Some "road" info. When we visited Mapungupwe 26 - 27 Oct 2012, we left Pretoria at 1.00am and drove via Dendron, Vivo and Alldays and arrived at the gate on the Den Staat road at 5.40. The gate at the Main Camp only opens later, and this one stays open. Just be careful for the horrible road surface full of huge potholes after Alldays. We also encounter Eland, Blue Wildebeest, Impalas, Warties and lots of Baboons on the way (also after we left Alldays).

We had to buy Petrol at Vivo, since the Petrol pumps in Alldays are not open all the time and we were too early for them.
